Zainal Abidin appointed chairman of Maybank Islamic

PETALING JAYA: Maybank Islamic Bhd has appointed Zainal Abidin Jamal (pic) as the new chairman with effect from June 1.
Maybank Islamic said in a media statement Zainal Abidin has been a director of Maybank Islamic since Jan 28, 2010.
Zainal Abidin, 63, has served as a director of Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) from July 2009 until April 2014, prior to his tenure as a director of Maybank Islamic. During his stint at Maybank, Zainal Abidin also served as a member of the credit review committee, nomination and remuneration committee and employees’ share scheme committee of the board.
He was also the chairman of Maybank Trustees Bhd. He is currently a director of Etiqa Takaful Bhd, part of Maybank.
Zainal Abidin, a practising corporate and commercial lawyer, established his firm, Zainal Abidin & Co in 1987, in which he remains senior partner.
Currently, he also serves on the boards of Sime Darby Bhd, Sime Darby Property Bhd, Sime Darby Industrial Holdings Sdn Bhd and Lam Soon (M) Bhd.
Maybank Islamic recorded a profit before tax of RM1.78bil, up 8.8% year-on-year (y-o-y) with a return on equity of 15.4% for the financial year 2016 (FY16).
According to Maybank’s annual report, Maybank Islamic’s financing saw a strong growth of RM18.77bil or 14.3% y-o-y for FY16, outpacing the industry’s growth of 11.4%.
